The remains of the late first military Governor of Old Imo (Compromising of present day Imo and Abia states) and Lagos states, Late Rear Admiral Godwin Ndubuisi has been laid to rest. The burial took place over the weekend at his country home in Ohoroho, Ovum, in Isukwuato Local Government Area of Abia state.
The funeral which witnessed a line up of dignitaries,family, friends and associates of the late administrator from all walks of life.
Speaking at the funeral service held at Methodist Church Nigeria, Ohoroho Ovim Circuit Isuikwuato Diocese, The Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche, tasked all to always live knowing fully well that when one is no more,the person will be judged by his legacies on earth.
The prelate further said that the late Kanu lived a life that was embroidered with peace, describing him as “a tremendous Icon, a peace lover that promoted justice, fair play and spirit of nationalism.”
Speaking at the event, President Muhammed Buhari ably represented by the minister of state for Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Uche Ogah, extolled the good virtues of the deceased, saying that he always stood for truth, fair play and Justice. The President added that the late Kanu was loved by all and described him as one of the brightest light from Isukwuato LGA.
The President condoled the bereaved family and urged them to live in peace, and harmony, imbibing the brotherhood their patriarch represented across the country.
Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu represented by his deputy, Ude Oko Chukwu, stated that the government and people of Abia were proud of their late illustrious son who had contributed immensely to the economic and socio political development of the state and Nigeria in general.
Also speaking the host Governor, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, represented by his Deputy, Ude Chukwu, thanked all who in one or the other played a part in the burial of the illustrious son. He particularly applauded the governments of Lagos and Imo States for the honouring the late Rear Admiral Kanu by naming state facilities after him.
He urged the family of the deceased and the entire Isukwuato community to bear the loss of their estimeed son as death is something beyond the control of man.
Ikpeazu further stated that the late Kanu played a very major role in the social, economic and political development of the states he governed, especially, Abia state. He asked God to grant the bereaved the fortitude to bear the lost.
The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma represented by his deputy, Prof. Placid Njoku and his Ebonyi State counterpart, Chief Dave Umahi, represented by his deputy, Mr. Kelechi Igwe, in their various speeches described the late Kanu as a proud son of Ndi Igbo.
They heaped praises on his patriotism and promotion of peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic nationalities.
Eulogizing the deceased, The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral A.Z.S. Gambo, described the deceased as a fine soldier and astute administrator who not only contributed to the peace of the country, but strived so hard to leave indelible marks in government through his selfless service.
The late Rear Admiral Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu will be remembered as one of the activists that fought under the umbrella of NADECO to restore democracy in Nigeria. He stood for democracy and good governance even till death.
He died at the age of 77.
