There was great confusion and pandemonium on Monday, the 4th of October, 2021 in Owerri, the Imo state capital as one of the state government's environmental agency had a rowdy confrontation with landlords and property owners.
The agency which had the mandate of the state government to destroy all illegal structures in the state had embarked on massive demolition of some structures on Port Harcourt road, Onitsha road, Control Post, world bank and bank road on the day.
The demolition however did not go down well with owners of the affected properties who engaged staff of the commission.
This instantly led to a near stampede scenario and in few minutes, the news spread widely to different parts of the city, causing residents, motorists and other road users to scramble for safety as the day incidentally is on Monday.
Recall that IPOB had declared Mondays as SIT-AT-HOME in the 5 states of the south east since the Federal government of Nigeria detained the leader of the organization.
The confusion led to immediate and sudden closure of banks, hotels, schools, markets, shops, parks and other government offices as roads in the city became hastily deserted.
However, there were huge presence of police, soldiers and other security agents strategically positioned on the roads in the city.
A member of the Hope new and electronic media who pleaded anonymity, when contacted by our correspondence, said that the confusion was formulated by the main opposition in their WhatsApp groups in order to discredit the government of the day, he however assured residents and visitors in the state that adequate security measures had been put in place to secure lives and properties.
