SHOCKER: ABSU ALLEGEDLY NULLIFIES SUG ELECTION WON BY IMO INDIGENE
The management of Abia State University, Uturu have come under fire and serious attacks from all corners for allegedly nullifying an SUG election won by an IMO indigene, five months ago.
This came as the body responsible for conduct of SUG elections in the school headed by their dean of students affairs Prof Levi Nwokocha, suddenly came up with a memo last week, for the conduct of by- election for the office of the SUG Vice President alone. People have widely condemned the move by the management, describing it as cruel, because the constitution of the union neither recognizes a bye election for a contest that was free and fair. They also pointed out that l, according to the law,the outcome of any election is subject to review, just within 21 days. But this had lasted for over five months. But Investigation by news hub revealed that the election which was initially conducted on December 17th 2021, saw an IMO daughter Awulotu Grace, of the nursing department emerge winner having defeated others with a wide margin.
But further investigations and feelers showed that SUGECO body and management of the school who had always shown clannish dispositions in their dealings are not comfortable with an IMO State indigene occupying the position of the SUG VP. Hence an order from top state Government official to the vice Chancellor to have the position ceded to an Abia indigene of Ngwa extraction who is said to be student of law department in the school. It was discovered that the claim in some quarters that a candidate was mistakenly screened out in the initial contest, hence reason for the bye election was merely diversionary.
Meanwhile, the National Association of IMO state students, both in the school and at the national level, had openly come out to condemn the clandestine move by the school management, threatening to institute a legal action against the management should the office be taken away from the actual winner,Grace Awulotu through any deceptive manner. Also, the SSA to the IMO state Governor on students affairs,Hon. Franklin Oparaji when contacted, confirmed that the report has been brought to his office and that the IMO state government is aware of the development, but keenly watching to see last turn out of event, before taking any step.
A student who pleaded anonymity advised the dean students affairs and his committee members to thread with caution by not allowing the office painstakingly won the girl taken away from her on selfish grounds. Noting that such act would be very counter productive and a big dent on the image and reputation of the Abia state university.
