Professor Ikechukwu. O. Agbagwa, Professor of Molecular Biology in the University of Port on Thursday, 16th December, 2021 gave the 178th inaugural lecture of the University.
Prof. Agbagwa spoke on the topic 'Taxonomic Complexities and Molecular Diversity: Ancient and Modern.
Guests, students and staff were held to a breathtaking lecture by the Imo state born seasoned teacher. At the end of the day, many went home satisfied
Professor I.O. Agbagwa is an erudite professor of Molecular Biology who has had several breakthroughs in the areas of Biosystematics and Taxonomy, Breeding Systems and Reproductive Biology, Phytochemistry, Plant Biotechnology, Genomics and Molecular Diversity, Biogeography and Ecology.
Some of his studies have led to the identification and nomenclature of some plant species that were formerly completely unknown to Science. Professor Agbagwa and his research team have produced biocatalysts that improved the production of biodiesel. Professor Agbagwa's research team have been able to produce bioethanol from the rhizome of a common grass. To help curb the menace of crude oil pollution, Professor Agbagwa and his team have also developed an approach that uses mushrooms to clean up crude oil spills in the Niger Delta.
In one of his studies, Professor Agbagwa and his research team have revealed that, for better fruits, cucumber is best pollinated by bees, therefore making suggestions that a bee farm sited close to a cucumber farm could be beneficial for the production of better cucumber fruits.
Professor Agbagwa has made a lot of contribution to the knowledge base of Plant Science and Biotechnology, all of which cannot be mentioned for reasons of brevity.
