OCDA GM issues Standard mix ratio to Block Industry Operators
In continuation of his engagements with Stakeholders in the building Industry as well as collaborating Agencies of OCDA for collective and effective working synergy, the Special Adviser/General Manager of Owerri Capital Development Authority, (OCDA) Engr. Francis Chukwu has cautioned block industry operators against moulding substandard blocks which he described as one of the causes of building collapse in the society.
He stated this when he played host to the Executive members of the Association of Block Industry Operators in the State. Chukwu stressed that sandcrete blocks are the most prominent of the concrete masonry units in the building industry today especially in the construction of residence, industrial and commercial building.
In his words, "Therefore the best mix ratio should be 1 bag of cement to 12 head pan sand or 1 bag of cement to 3 wheelbarrow of sand at a corresponding level. As a regulatory and enforcement Agency, we are committed to ensuring that going forward any practice that runs short of the expected standard will not be allowed".
The OCDA helmsman disclosed that in few weeks to come he will lead operatives of the Agency to ascertain level of compliance by block industry operators while reiterating that the mandate given to him by Gov. Hope Uzodimma is to sanitize and restore public confidence in the OCDA, pointing out that the Agency will partner with the group to advance the activities in the building sector.
In their separate speeches, Akpan Samuel, Illomuanya Theophilus, and Pst. Edwin Emenalo, all thanked the GM for interfacing with the Association while appealing to him to see that their members are considered in paying affordable fees as tax to State Government.
