Indefinite Strike likely to commence on Monday- ASUU
... as FUTO, IMSU chapters mobilize support
There are Strong signals that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASSU may commence an indefinite and a total industrial action on Monday after its National Executive Council meeting billed for 12th and 13th of February, 2022.
The ASUU Chairperson, Federal University of Technology, FUTO, Owerri, Dr. Chinedu Ihejirika gave the hint while addressing newsmen in a press conference held in Owerri, yesterday. Ihejirika said ASSU has exhausted all means and patience for the Federal Government to implement elements of the agreement it reached with the academic body since 2009.
According to him, "in the wake of Federal Government's continued disregard to calls from well-meaning Nigerians including our Elder Statesmen, revered religious and traditional leaders on this issue, ASSU will be left with no other option but to embark on a comprehensive, indefinite and total industrial action."
Also speaking to newsmen, his counterpart in Imo State University IMSU, Owerri, Dr. Augustine Ejiogu, in a separate press conference held at the institution, implored students, parents and other concerned to join efforts in compelling the government to earnestly meet the agreements.
Ejiogu also appealed to civil society organizations (CSOs), stakeholders and other concerned Nigerians to prevail on the government to sign and implement the agreement without further delay.
He said, "this press conference is therefore a patriotic call on the FGN led by President Muhammadu Buhari to expeditiously sign and implement the renegotiated 2009 ASUU/FGN or face the consequences of total and indefinite strike."
It could be recalled that ASUU had earlier suspended the strike action it embarked upon over the FG's failure to resolve the protracted issue of new salary structure, payment of the Earned Academic Allowance, EAA, non payment of promotional arrears, funding for revitalization of public universities, among others.
