IMHA To Investigate Power Outage And Cause Of Night Operational Inefficiencies At Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport
— Sets Up Adhoc Committee To Undertake Working Visit To the Airport.
— Urges Governor To Take Up Issues To FG/FAAN.
The Imo State House of Assembly has commenced actions to investigate the cause of operational inefficiencies such as power outages which inhibit night operations at the San Mbakwe International cargo airport.
The house in a motion moved by the Honorable member representing the good people of Ideato South state Constituency Hon. Johnson Duru said that "Whereas operational inefficiencies have been witnessed at the Sam mbakwe Cargo Airport, which preliminary and independent findings reveal that the armoured cables supplying light to the run- way at nights were vandalized and stolen by unidentified criminals;
"Witnessing that the airport only function at day times; leading to below the line operations, especially as cargo airport, which operations of cargo planes are mainly at nights;
"Also revealed by private investigations made at the airport that the immediate past Governor of the IMO state, His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha released money for replacement of the vandalized lighting system at the airport, yet no replacement was made till date and the problems of the airport still persist;
"It is obvious that both the state and federal Government have lost a lot of revenue due to the under utilization of the airport, which only run daylight operations."
Rising from the deliberations, the house resolved to set up an adhoc committee to pay a working visit to airport to meet with the airport manager to find out all the militating factors hampering the operations of the airport.
The house further resolved to "direct the adhoc committee to find out from the accountant General of the IMO state, whether or not the previous administration actually made fund releases to the airport manager for replacement of the vandalized lighting system at the airport, how much was released and why the money was not utilized according."
Adopting the resolution, the house further resolved "to urge the incumbent Governor of the state, His Excellency, Most distinguished Senator Hope Uzordinma to take up the matter with the federal ministry of Aviation and it's parastatal, the federal airport authority of Nigeria ( FAAN) to help facilitate replacement of the missing gadgets so as to restore full operation at the airport."
