IMHA beams search light on Private Hospitals

All is set for Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA), to ensure standard practice and quality assurance in private hospitals.

This follows a motion moved by Rt. Hon. Hon Arthur Egwim, member representing Ideato North State Constituency, during plenary on Thursday.

The motion is titled: "Motion to urge the governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma to direct the Hon Commissioner for Health to set up a taskforce to embark on inspection of all the private hospitals, other health facilities , equipment and personnel, in collaboration with MNA for quality assurance and generation of revenue for the state".

Discussing the motion, Rt. Hon. Arthur Egwim, observed that most private hospitals and other health facilities in Imo State are ill-equipped and engaged in below the standard practice.

He noted that through such practice many lives have been lost as a result of quackery, use of poor equipment and employment of unqualified medical personnel.

He therefore prayed the House to urge the governor to direct the Hon. Commissioner for Health in collaboration with the Nigerian Medical Health Associated, to ensure regular inspection of all the private medical facilities, hospitals including pharmaceutical industries for quality assurance and best practices in the state.

He also prayed the House to urge the governor to direct the ministry of health to set up taskforce that will ensure that all hospitals operating in Imo State function within the prescribed laws of the state and ensure collection of revenue.

It was also prayed that the House invite the Commissioner of Health and other principal officers of the ministry to interface with House Committee on Health.

Most of the House members spoke in favour of the motion, calling for the invitation of the commissioner of health and other principal officers of the ministry, to interface with House Committee on Health . Eddy Obinna(Aboh Mbaise).

Having listened to a robust debate on the motion, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Chidozie Ibeh, Put the prayers to vote and the Issssssssssss carried the day.

Also at the plenary, Rt. Hon. Collin Chiji, former speaker (Isiala Mbano), moved a motion of plea, requesting the House, in the spirit of Easter celebration, to convert his impeachment to resignation.

Among those who supported his motion is the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Amarachi Iwuanyanwu. The deputy speaker pleaded with the House to consider the plea since he has been of good behaviour and contributed to the development of the House since his impeachment.

The House granted his request and the Rt. Hon. Speaker directed that a letter be transmitted to the former Speaker commuting his impeachment to resignation.

Similarly, former Speaker Paul Emeziem, who was impeached but pardoned after he apologized, thanked the Speaker and other Honourable members for admitting him back to the House.
