Imo state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma has inaugurated members of the state's Law Reform Commission (LRC), the commission will be chaired by the Attorney General and Honourable Commissioner for Justice of the state, Hon. Barr. C. O. C. Akaolisa as it is statutory
The Governor quoted the Imo State Law No 41 of 2019 as the basis for setting up the commission to restructure obsolete laws in the state.
"In accordance with the relevant sections of the Imo State Law No 41 of 2019, we have taken steps to restructuring of obsolete laws and those with no deterrent by inaugurating members of the Imo State Law Reform Commission (LRC) statutorily chaired by the Attorney General of Imo State and Honourable Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Barr. C. O. C Akaolisa". Uzodinma said
The Governor further said "Saddled with the responsibility of collating and keeping under review, Laws of Eastern Nigeria 1963 as applicable to Imo State and Laws of Imo State since 1976, with a view to their systematic and progressive development and reform in consonance with the prevailing norms of the Imo Society. The Commission is expected to swiftly swing into action in order to reposition our dear State in line with global best practices on justice dispensation by domesticating and harmonizing Laws of Imo State from 1963 to date, leading to the discontinuation of Laws of Eastern Nigeria quotation in our Law Courts".
The Imo State Chief Executive said the State is partnering with Civil Society Organizations (CSO) to decongest the Correctional Centers in the State.
"With the domestication of the Imo State Administration of Criminal Justice Act and our recent partnership with Civil Society Organizations (CSO) for a pilot program in the Reform and Decongestion of Correctional Centers, we have progressed on our journey for a strengthened and improved justice system in our dear Imo State". He said
