Chukwu inaugurates joint team to checkmate building collapse
Worried by the issue of building collapse in Owerri Capital city , the Special Adviser and General Manager of Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) Engr. Francis Chukwu on Thursday inaugurated a joint committee comprising members of Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) Owerri Branch, Engineering Regulation and Monitoring Committee and the personnel of the Quality Control Room of the Agency.
Performing the Inauguration, the OCDA helmsman Engr. Chukwu charged them to be proactive in order to identify and get rid of quacks in the building construction Activities in and around Owerri Capital Territory, adding that the measure will go a long way towards eradicating the issue of the use of substandard materials and local aggregates in building construction that could lead to Building collapse in the State Capital.According to Engr. Chukwu, "the essence of partnering with you is for us to see how we can get rid of Quacks because the Shared Prosperity Government of His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has zero tolerance for poor quality projects and will not relent in ensuring that Building projects being carried out will always be in line with Bill of Engineering, Measurement and Evaluation (BEME) and in accordance with International best Practices
."The Governor's Aide who tasked the Team to pay dedicated attention to the building construction activities by visiting various Building sites to ascertain if the Engineers handling projects are registered accordingly, noting that in cases where unregistered Engineers are found executing Building projects, the Team has the right to place embargo on such projects and even to replace the Engineer with a certified one to complete the project.
Responding, the leader of the Nigeria Society of Engineers Owerri Branch, Engineering Regulation and Monitoring Committee Engr. Prof. Godwin Osueke (FNSE) commended the OCDA General Manager for his disposition towards ensuring quality service delivery in Engineering sub sector and noted that as a standing Committee saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the application of positive and quality Standards as prescribed by the code of Engineering practice, they are committed to partnering with OCDA to achieving the desired results.
He explained that the Engineers that made up the ERM Team come from diverse Engineering fields and are also registered with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering (COREN), pointing out that they will always ensure that projects are well executed according to the stipulated Engineering specifications.
