Bullying: Video of FGGC Owerri occurred amongst Classmates - Alumni President

RE: TRENDING VIDEO ON SOCIAL MEDIA REFERENCING FGGC OWERRI

The attention of the Old Girls’ Association of FGGC Owerri, has been drawn to a video trending all over social media referencing our Alma Mater. Expectedly, we were horrified with what we saw, especially in view of the recent terrible incident that allegedly occurred at Dowen College in Lagos. We decided to conduct our investigations, in order to ascertain the true state of the affair, before making a public pronouncement.

Our Findings:

1. The incident occurred amongst classmates – SS3 Students, during the recent WASC/NECO sometime in August of this year.

2. The incident was investigated by the School Management and the students involved faced disciplinary measures which included being de-boarded.

3. Both the person physically abusing her classmate and the person being abused are no longer students of FGGC Owerri.

This unfortunate incident has brought to the fore, once again, the decadence that permeates almost every facet of our society today, and goes against the ethics, norms and values that we were taught while in school. The Alumnae of FGGC Owerri have always championed the cause of developing ourselves, our younger sisters and daughters in our Alma Mater, into women of character and distinction. We believe that a counter-culture and re-orientation from what is pervasive in our schools and society should be presented and imbibed for change to come, not just to our school but our nation as a whole.

To this end, we started the “Big Sister” Mentoring Program some years ago in our Alma Mater, and are presently working on broadening the scope, which will be implemented in the first quarter of next year. However, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done, and must be tackled holistically with everyone and every part of the society being involved. From our homes, schools, places of work, places of worship, social groups and communities, we need to be the change we hope to see. We enjoin us all to do more than just forward the videos and stories. Be a part of the solution to re-orienting our youths. Get involved, anyhow, anywhere and in any way you can. The journey of a thousand miles starts in one day. Start today.

PRO UNITATE.

URENNA IHEME

NATIONAL PRESIDENT, FGGC OWERRI OLD GIRLS ’ASSOCIATION.
