AFTERMATH OF BUILDING COLLAPSE: OCDA BEAMS SEARCHLIGHT ON HIGH-RISERS

Consequent upon the incident of Building Collapse last week at Umuguma in Owerri West LGA of the State, the Owerri Cpital Development Authority (OCDA) has beamed its searchlight on the construction of very tall buildings with many floors otherwise known as High Risers in Owerri the State Capital.Leading the operational Team of Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) during a routine assessment visit to some of the buildings at Area B New Owerri opposite Ahiajoku Convention Centre, the Special Adviser/General Manager of Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) Engr. Francis Chukwu disclosed that the exercise was borne out of the need to critically assess the level of compliance of the developers to the use of Standard materials in building construction, pointing out that the step is one of the proactive measures being taken by the State Government to prevent issues of Building Collapse.

Engr. Chukwu while assessing some of the materials used for the building projects alongside other professional Engineers from the Agency, directed the developers to report to the Agency with thier building plans and other relevant documents for recertification.

The OCDA helmsman who sealed up another ongoing building along All Seasons Avenue New Owerri, explained that the building was sealed up because it was being constructed at the verge and directly under High Tension electricity wires, noting that such building activity could lead to fatalities arising from electrocution of the site workers.

Other areas visited by the General Manager and the operational Team were two ongoing High risers within Area B New Owerri and one ongoing High riser along Okigwe road opposite Civil Defence Owerri in which the workers at the respective sites were served demand notices accordingly in order to report to the Agency with relevant documents pertaining to the ongoing buildings.
